Rotary joint – a joint where two or more pieces of the same material touch one another, in a way that allows them to move freely in a directed path. There are two different kinds of rotary joints: mechanical and optical. Optical fiber rotary joints (or simply optical rotary joints) are an engineered optical coupling method for passing light signals across various rotating surfaces, particularly when transmitting large amounts of information.

The rotary joint like electrical rotary joint uses light beams (or a combination of light beams and acoustic waves) to transmit information between two or more pieces of a fixed device or structure. With the rotary joint, you can use two or more light beams to transmit signals at various angles, all of which are transmitted in the same direction.

A rotary joint is usually made up of a shaft, a guide ring, and a seat. The shaft is usually constructed out of a smooth metallic or plastic material having a grain structure. On the other hand, the seat can be made from a flexible metallic material having an inner liner that is designed to prevent friction between the two.

To further reduce friction, the seat and the shaft should be sealed together. In this case, there is minimal quantity lubrication between the component parts. However, a lubricant is usually used as a protective lubricant, to ensure long service life.

While most rotary unions mount the workpiece, some use screw-type mount for machine tools. Although screw-type machines tooling is usually more expensive than those using shaft mount, they provide a better quality in terms of performance and longevity. As screw machine tools can be subject to more wear and tear due to tight tolerance to temperature fluctuations, they are usually preferred in industrial applications.

Rotary unions consist of the shaft, the seat, and the ball bearings. The shaft is the main moving component while ball bearings serve only as a guide for the movement of the shaft. Bearings may either be one side or both sides of the inner ring. The number of ball bearings usually determines the degree of twisting of the joint. The number of ball bearings in the joint dictates its level of stiffness and ability to withstand high stress and temperature changes.
